20/03/19 Black Box Insurance has saved £50m in Insurance Premiums

Drivers have saved £50m in the last five years because of the introduction of ‘Black Box’ policies on car insurance.

An analytics partner of Direct Line called ‘The Floow’ have analysed two billion driver miles, discovering a massive saving in insurance premiums by people opting for the black Box options. On average people have saved over £250 a year on insurance policies with black boxes installed.

A 'Black Box' electronic monitoring device is fitted to the car which reports various real-time statistics back to the insurer such as - miles travelled, how the car is driven, whether economically or not and if the driver has driven within the speed limits. This helps insurers monitor the pre-arranged limits agreed regarding mileage and hours driven as part of their policy terms and conditions.

Because their driving style is recorded and monitored , drivers are offered cheaper premiums. This comes as a helpful solution to the higher priced policies for new drivers or drivers with convictions. Drivers can be rewarded with cheaper policies for driving safely - but can also be faced with 'fines' or cancelled policies if they don’t keep within the agreed restrictions.

However boxes can also be useful for the driver too – by providing online access to a summary of their journeys so they can keep track of the way they drive.

The downside to this type of policy is that some drivers may end up paying more than a 'normal' policy, if they end up with additional premiums for not driving in accordance with the insurer guidelines. Drivers could also have to pay for the installation of the box itself, meaning the cost savings are not as good as they may first appear.

Using these devices can mean drivers are not covered at all times - so it is important to ensure policies are thoroughly checked.

At this time of year, drivers should always be aware of their policy rules whether they have a black box or not. As an example, if you leave your keys in the ignition to warm the car up and your car is stolen, your insurance policy isn’t likely to let you claim due to negligence.

It’s important to double check your policy to make sure your covered at all times, some policies can have different rules regarding bad weather driving and if you have an accident due to driving on ice.

No need to claim on your insurance

Anyone who has been involved in a road accident has the right to choose who repairs their vehicle. If you were responsible for the accident you were involved in, the company that insures your vehicle would normally deal with your accident claim.

However if you were not at-fault for the accident, you can choose to either claim on your own insurance policy or make a claim independently of your insurer. To find out more call 02392 484 244 and we will be happy to help.

We and our partners help thousands of people make independent accident claims. Our service enables motorists to get the help and assistance they need to resolve their accident related issues, with the costs being recovered directly from the at-fault driver on your behalf.

No excess to pay

Unfortunately even if an accident was not your fault, your insurer will almost certainly require you to pay your excess before any repair is started on your car.

This money should of course be recovered by an insurer at a later date, but with our service - you do not have to pay it at all.

By using our independent claims service, you are not making a claim on your insurance policy and so you will have no excess to pay.

Receive a comparable replacement hire vehicle

Not all insurance policies will include a replacement hire-car for you to use if yours is damaged and unroadworthy. In fact it is typically an 'optional extra' on your policy.

Car Call and its partners will provide a comparable replacement vehicle as part of our service. This means we will endeavour to supply a hire-vehicle that similar to your own in terms of its type, make and engine size.
